GG23 on Celo: 7 Community Rounds with over 240K in total Matching

CeloPG is excited to announce the seven community rounds that will run on Celo during the upcoming Gitcoin Grants 23.

GG23 on Celo: 7 Community Rounds with over 240K in total Matching

This round will be special, as Gitcoin has expanded beyond the traditional Quadratic Funding mechanism toward a multi-mechanism future. This means additional flexibility in tools and methods used by Grants rounds to optimize the value created by the distributed funds. In addition to the Core Rounds by Gitcoin, which now also include a large Retro Round, multiple Community Rounds will be operated by independent round operators in various niches.

CeloPG has collaborated closely with the Community Round operators and is excited to announce that 7 out of the anticipated 10 community rounds will operate on Celo!

- GoodBuilders Kickoff Round by GoodDollar to support GoodBuilders on Celo.
- Regen Coordination ImpactQF to reward real-world communities for their impact in creating meaningful local and onchain impact.
- Hypercerts for Nature Stewards by GainForest and Hypercerts to reward grassroots nature stewards restoring ecosystems.
- ReFI Mediterranean region-specific round supporting innovative projects in the Mediterranean.
- Regen Rio de Janiero funding non-profits and capital allocation programs, operated by Greenpill Brasil.
- Web 3 Universities by BorderlessDev supports university clubs and programs in Africa.
- DeSci Community Round supporting early-stage DeSci projects.

Application period opens: March 17th - 31st
Round live:
April 2nd - 16th
Total Matching:
USD $240,500

Matching on Matching on Matching
Another positive development in this round is the realization of Matching on Matching on Matching, where CeloPG, Owocki, and Gitcoin each provided matching funding to multiple rounds, resulting in most community rounds being funded with sufficient resources to run and showcasing the power of collaboration and resource pooling to accomplish shared objectives more effectively.

Ethereum Localism on Celo
The upcoming community rounds also further develop Celo’s role in the emerging Ethereum Localism cluster. Ethereum Localism refers to the use of Web3 tools and infrastructure to empower local communities, municipalities, and bioregions, enabling decentralized funding flows, civic innovation, and regenerative economics. CeloPG steward Monty attended the General Forum on Ethereum Localism in Denver and has since played an important role in shaping the Ethereum Localism vision.

Live on CEL2
The GG23 round will be the first Gitcoin Round on CEL2, the new L2 network of Celo powered by the OP Stack that will launch on March 25th. With this transition, Celo will return to Ethereum and become an official Ethereum L2. The new chain will have many perks, from operating more efficiently to reducing (nearly all) friction when interacting across Ethereum and OP chains. Read more about CEL2 here.

A regenerative digital economy for all
Celo’s mission is to build a regenerative digital economy that creates conditions of prosperity for all. Creating collective wealth and supporting all builders equally is integral to the Celo vision. By nurturing projects and individuals who contribute to the well-being of the Celo ecosystem through GG23 and other Celo Public Goods programs, we contribute to creating a digital economy that can coordinate toward critical real-world change.

If you’re interested in helping shape the regenerative digital economy, consider this your invitation to become part of the Celo ecosystem. CeloPG will ensure your contributions will be acknowledged and rewarded.
